Centerton announces Students of the Month

At the end of the month, a "Student of the Month" is selected from each classroom. The picture of each of these students will be on the Student of the Month board as well as in the newsletter. Congratulations to the Centerton Elementary students of the month for January. Just another day shopping at Walmart

Have you ever felt that you were stuck in a black hole of circumstances that made the hair raise up on the back of your neck? My daughter-in-law and my three grandchildren were shopping at a Walmart I won't name (not our local stores) and having a wonderful time. She had gotten some money back on her taxes and decided to beef up on household decorative items, food, clothing and video games for the kids. The store was offering some great sales, as Walmart always does.

Soldiers spend time with Eminence third-graders

Mrs. Koosman's third-graders became battle buddies with Private Gruener and Private Trinkle during their basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. After graduation, the soldiers took time to visit the Eminence third-graders. They sat in small groups with the children and allowed them to ask questions. They also helped each student make a survival bracelet. Private Gruener is now stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington in a Striker unit and Private Trinkle is back in Georgia training to be a Ranger. Those flowers will be frozen

Guess what? It's Sunday afternoon, but the surprise is that the sun is shining, even if it is a bit cold. We have had weather of all types, but my spring bulbs keep on growing. I just know that they are going to get their little noses frozen solid, maybe boys' sectional weekend. The snow drops are showing white, but haven't come out completely. Imagine they will if we meet the 50 degree day the man is promising later in the week. They usually are in bloom Feb. 22.

The real truth about what we do is that we couldn't do it if you didn't share your blessings with us. Our goal is to help our neighbors meet their basic needs for everyday living when their own resources are simply not enough. Whether it is food for the table or actually providing a table to put the food on, we do our best. Perhaps it is financial, but what our neighbors need more than anything is prayer. Whatever it is, we do our best.

Community supports athletes, academics

Martinsville's decathlon team received a standing applause during halftime of Tuesday's home game. The team received a check for $7,500 from donations from the crowd and community to help pay for its trip to New Mexico for the national competition for its 15th consecutive year. From left, Coach Wayne Babbit, senior Morgan Lane, sophomore Stephanie Schneck, senior Steven Fish, juniors Emerson Watson and Elliott Guist, and senior Olivia Wooten, accepted the check. During Tuesday's game, a total of $16,000 was raised. A portion of the funds will be returned to the athletic department to pay for tickets and the remaining funds - a total of $11,000 - will go to the high school's Academic Decathlon team. Wilt wins East spelling bee

East Middle School sixth-grader Ali Wilt was the winner of the school spelling bee. She will compete in the regional spelling bee on Saturday at the Monroe County Public Library. The library is located at 303 E Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington. Winners in that round of competition have the opportunity to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Smith Elementary School librarian Melanie Foley and principal Jan Gearhart receive a hardback book written and illustrated by Poston Road Elementary School students. Representing the Poston Road students is Jestina Dent. The book is titled, "The Six Pillars of Character, Who Am I?" The pillars are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Thirty-five students from Poston Road Elementary illustrated people and objects in the book to represent each of the pillars. The book will be available to staff and students at Smith Elementary. Production of the book was made possible by the Psi Iota Xi Sorority, A Learn and Serve grant from the state of Indiana and several private donors. The Martinsville Kiwanis Club and additional donations assisted in providing softback copies for each participating student.

Bomb threat unfounded

A bomb threat was called in to the Morgan County Sheriff's Department around 7 a.m. Tuesday. The caller said there was a bomb at the high school, but did not say which high school before hanging up the phone.

MSD of Martinsville executive session

The Metropolitan School District of Martinsville will have an executive session at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the district's administration building, 460 S. Main St., Martinsville. The meeting is to "receive information concerning the individual's alleged misconduct and to discuss before a determination, the individual's status as an employee, a student, or an independent contractor."
